Sharing the gospel
What is the gospel?
The simplest answer is it’s the message of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. It’s the good news of salvation that Jesus brought into the world. Every Christian should know that Jesus asked, well actually He commanded believers, to go into the world and preach the gospel. (Mark 16:15)
I think there’s some confusion for believers in this simple command, because there was for me too. In my opinion, the confusion is because we have the gospel (message) and the Gospel (New Testament), which are two very different things. Many believers feel unqualified to preach, and why wouldn’t we, after all there are professionals to do that, and they spent 2-4 years in seminary school.
For the record, I am not down playing the need for trained ministry (priest, preachers, pastor, ministers, etc), because they know the theology behind the verses, with deep understanding of the Bible as a whole, and they Preach the Gospel for our benefit.
But we’ve got to realize, Jesus was speaking to ordinary uneducated men, His eleven disciples, (followers, believers) when He said this. What He was saying to them was that they knew His message, so go and share it. That’s also what He expects from all of us, as believers, to simply share His message.
“How much do you have to hate somebody to believe that everlasting life is possible and not tell them that?” - Penn Jillette (Penn & Teller) an atheist
This is a man that does not believe in God, yet asks, very plainly, how much a Christian would have to hate someone not to share the good news of Jesus. That’s an intense question, and I read it several times in order to grasp the depth of it.
After all, Jesus also commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31). And if we're being true to that, then we couldn't possibly hate them so much that we don’t tell them about Jesus and eternal life.
So why is it so difficult for most believers to share the message of Jesus more frequently? One word …. PERSECUTION.
Persecution is a strong word to use, but it can come in many forms such as rejection, harassment, ostracism, imprisonment, and even death. Fortunately, most of us will never face imprisonment or death for our Christianity, however the fear of the other forms of persecution are very real for most of us. It’s the dark world we live in that is silencing, even repressing many believers.
So what can believers do to get past this fear of sharing their faith, and to spread the message of Jesus to those around us?
There is only one way….. walk through the fear, after all, there is no fear in love - 1John 4:18
It’s our mission at let’s make JESUS famous: to teach Christians how to live in their faith, and how to impact lives by sharing Jesus with the people around them. We encourage, equip, and unite fellow believers in spreading the message of Jesus... while being both comfortable and confident doing it.
